DITIKENI Annual Report 2022

Ditikeni is again profiling the best and the brightest of South African art this year. Every annual report we publish features artwork that shows the rich talent our country holds and this year we chose the work of Bruce Bowale. This Limpopo-born artist grew up in Pretoria. We sat down with him to ask a few questions about his work and his inspiration.

Intraparadox

In this addition of Intraparadox, I have a conversation with Bruce Bowale in the backdrop of his pop-up exhibition at Stuart Trent Art Gallery, Waterkloof – Tshwane, during this month. Bowale has produced around twenty artworks for this exhibition. While half of the artworks were produced during lockdown whilst he was in Limpopo, Zebediela. The other works were produced in Gauteng from when our country moved to COVID-19 Level 3 restrictions.

Legae/Khayalethu with Lounge+ Podcast. AVA Gallery

In episode 1 join Bruce Bowale and Chumisa Fihla as they discuss their two-man show, the art of collaboration, and what home means to them. Bruce, a multimedia artist originally from Limpopo, combines text and images to express his experience of moving from a rural to an urban space as a young child. Sculptor Chumisa also looks to his past, particularly to his father’s stories of the Eastern Cape, to create sculptures from scrap metal that evoke the forgotten histories of his people and pay homage to his Xhosa roots.
